STAC NOTE STAC NOTE
CONFIGURING HOST AND VIEWER FOR REMOTE PRINTING
(Applies to ReachOut versions 3.X, 4.X, & 5.X except for Windows
Viewing section)
STAC FAX 8507 (05/96)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
BACKGROUND
You may print what you see on a Host machine at the Viewer's
printer. The Host sends the printer output to printer port LPT1.
ReachOut ôcapturesö the output and sends it to the Viewer. This
assumes that nothing else has previously captured LPT1. See Note
1. The output is formatted on the Host side according to the
application's printer driver, and is sent directly to the
Viewer's printer port. It does not pass through any printer
driver on the Viewer side. If the Host is in Windows and a
Windows program is told to print, Windows captures the print job
and sends it directly to the printer port bypassing 'LPT1', so
ReachOut won't see it. If the Viewer is in Windows and the Host
is in DOS, the problems of drivers and timing come into play on
both the Host and Viewer side.
Note: If you are redirecting printing from a Windows 95 Host, see
StacFax 8515.
Follow the steps below for the scenario that fits your setup. If
you still cannot get the Viewer to print from the Host try the
test in Note 5 below.
SOLUTION: HOST SETUP
If you are printing from a Windows application
1. From the ReachOut Host menu security screen confirm that
Disallow Printer Redirection is not checked.
2. From the Windows Control Panel select Printers. From this
menu confirm the printer attached to the VIEWER machine is
installed. If not refer to your Windows documentation to
install the correct printer driver.
3. With this printer selection highlighted click on the
'connect' button. From this screen connect the VIEWERS
printer to LPT1.DOS and set Fast Printing Direct To Port to
off, (i.e. the box is unchecked).
4. When printing from this scenario, if the printer has not
been set as the default printer on the Host, be sure to
select the proper printer each time you print from the Hosts
applications.
If you are printing from a DOS application
1. From the DOS ReachOut Host menu select the Security pulldown
menu. Under Printer Redirection, confirm that Allow Viewer
To Redirect is enabled.
2. Open the application you intend to print from, and select
the printer driver for the printer connected to your VIEWER
Machine.
If the printing program is a DOS application running on the Host
from within Windows see note 3 below.
SOLUTION: VIEWER SETUP
If you are Viewing from Windows
1. From the Windows Control Panel select Printers. From this
menu select a printer driver that supports a Pass Through
mode (note 4). This selection does not have to match the
printer connected to your Viewer.
A Hewlett Packard Laser Jet Series II driver supports the
Pass Thru mode and is a perfect default for this selection.
2. While still in the Printers menu, click on the ôconnectö
button. Confirm that the printer you intend to use is
associated with the correct printer port (usually LPT1).
3. From the ReachOut Windows Viewer Menu select Preferences.
From the printing section select the redirection you
require, (i.e. Viewer Only, Host Only, Both... see note 2
below)
4. From this same section choose the printer that you
configured in step #1 in this section.
5. If you're using Windows 95 as the Viewer system, open the
properties for the printer you're using. On the "Details"
page, click on the "spooling options" button. Set the spool
file type to RAW (the default is EMF).
If You Are Viewing from DOS
1. From the ReachOut DOS Viewer Menu select the Printing
pulldown menu. Select Your Print Device and select the port
your printer is connected to.
2. From the Printing pulldown menu, select Host Printer Output
and select the redirection you require (i.e. To Viewer Only,
To Host Only, To Both... see note 2)
REMOTE PRINTING AND GATEWAYS
You may connect a modem Viewer and a network Host system via a
ReachOut gateway. This setup uses a bridge computer that is
running ReachOut in DOS. See the ReachOut User's Guide for
information on setting up a gateway. If you wish to do remote
printing while using a gateway, follow the directions above for
Host and Viewer. Simply ignore the presence of the gateway in the
connection.
NOTES
1. If there is a network capture of the printer ports you must
release the capture (in Novell. do an ENDCAP, in Lantastic
do NET UNUSE). If capturing is done on 'LPT1' and you want
ReachOut to capture only 'LPT2', edit the GHM.BAT and add
LPTICPT=2 to the RCHDOS line.
2. The only way to print to 'both' is to have printers on both
sides that will work with the same printer driver. If you
need to have output to both sides and they do not have
matching printer driver capability you will have to print
once to Host Only with the Host's printer driver selected,
then select the ViewerÆs printer driver and print to Viewer
only.
3. a. The ReachOut DOS host must be loaded for remote printing
to work from a DOS application in Windows. The easiest way
to do this is to run HOST before starting Windows. DonÆt
bother to load the Windows Host if you do this. You donÆt
need it, and you will just get an error message if you try
it when using the modem version.
b. This scenario also gets special attention due to timing
issues between DOS and Windows which differ whether the
application is running in 'full screen' or 'windowed'. When
the Viewer is calling from Windows it runs the DOS
application from a PIF (VIEWDOS.PIF in the ReachOut
directory). If you find that the start of the printing takes
too long (20 minutes in one case), try changing to ôwindowed
modeö or raising the advanced settings in the PIF for
foreground / background priorities. You must also be
concerned with the PIF on the Host side for the DOS
application from which you are printing. If it does not
exist you may have to create one that runs that application
in a 'window' or 'full screen' and change the timing via
advanced settings - Background / Foreground Priorities.
4. After setting all other parameters as outlined above, if you
do not get output to the printer at the Viewer side, install
the HP LJII Series printer and choose it from the Viewer
menuÆs preferences screen. If that scenario prints, your
printer does not support passthrough mode. Use the HP II
driver and select it each time in 'preferences' before you
connect. If it still didnÆt print recheck all steps above
and try note 5.
5. Try printing to a spool file: From the Viewer menuÆs
preferences section choose Viewer only, Spool File, and name
the spool file 'TEST.SPL'. Try printing. After printing,
check in the ReachOut directory for a file named TEST.SPL.
If it exists the output was sent to the Viewer but did not
get to the printer. Try changing the ôflush timeoutö (ver.
4.04). If it did not create the TEST.SPL, the output was
never sent from the Host. Recheck all settings and that all
'captures' are 'off'.
6. If there is no physical 'LPT1' port on the Host, add
PHONYLPTS=1 to the RCHDOS line of the GHM.BAT.
Known Windows printers drivers that do NOT support passthrough:
All HP LJIII HP Deskjet 520's thru 560's Some of the HP 4 drivers
